What do you get when you mix Beck, horror movies, and small-town Kentucky trauma? Apparently Social Cues, #CageTheElephant’s dark cinema record. “We were watching I Am a Killer while writing ‘House of Glass,’” #BradSchultz tells me. “And #JohnCarpenter—who’s also from Bowling Green—was a huge influence.”

We talk about working with David Campbell, almost making a full movie called The Broken Boy, and why #MattShultz’s brutal divorce lyrics still manage to feel universal. “We’re not writing to be seen as poetic,” Matt says. “We just want to make good songs with great hooks.”

And despite the old narrative, they’ve got no shame about Kentucky anymore. “It was a chip on our shoulder,” Matt says. “Now I come back and finish lyrics here. There’s a humility in this place.”
